After the relatively mild months of December and January, February came along with a pleasant surprise. In the exceptionally warm last weeks of January, there was a sudden forecast of a blizzard, storm, snow and ice.
Holland loves ice and snow
I forgot…
Saturday night of February 6 started off first with expected rain and rising winds. From 9PM onwards, it started snowing. It felt like new years eve to me, I was so exited and looking forward to see the snow come in!
The next day was as was predicted. Winds had created dunes of snow in our yard, our garden gate nearly couldn’t be opened by the piles of snow blown up by the wind. It was marvelous.
After the wind faded a bit the water opposite our house started freezing over, and sure enough, this week we saw children and grown-ups alike skating everywhere. It made my heart swell with joy. I myself do not have skates anymore but I enjoyed watching it just as much. And suddenly I remembered – but almost forgot – how much we Dutchies love our winter, ice, snow and skates.
Photo’s of snow by Gert-Jan, and some by me (you recognize which are which, Gert’s photos are always better than mine. 😉
